Challenge Your Marketing Strategy Beyond Your Website

thoughtblazers’ commentary

We get stuck thinking about new content for our website and forget about all the physical media and methods for promoting our products and services. Next time, why not put your message on an octopus kite or something else that grabs attention beyond the digital and into the physical, tangible realm?

Let your employees try different tools and resources. Don’t assume you know what will work for them and what won’t. A lot of successful change management comes from trial and error.

thoughtblazers’ commentary:

The writer of this Verge article describes this 3D printed car as a ‘go kart made from Rubbermaid garbage cans’. The point is you can now make a mode of transportation anywhere if you have the right printer, printing material, computer, and a fuel/energy source.

Think of the possibilities for the military, for emergency/rescue situations, and even for transportation in developing countries.

An innovation like this can save a life or change the economy of an impoverished part of the world overnight.

The quality of this drone video is very impressive. The images are very clear and the the flight pattern of the drone appears to be so smooth. This video emphasizes that fact that higher end drones are very sophisticated, and are much more than a toy remote control airplane.

I’m also impressed that the fireworks didn’t send a fatal blow to the drone!

Although the wood construction looks attractive, the drawback of this wheel is that your forward vision is obstructed. It actually seems a bit claustrophobic to me. This one might not be bad for a periodic workout during the day, but for my money I much prefer the treadmill.

DO FACEBOOK & COWORKERS MIX?

This article is a good one to get you thinking about the issue. Some additional thoughts: 1) Can you really ignore the request? If you really don’t want to accept the request, shouldn’t you talk to your coworker about it? Yes, it’s awkward but isn’t it better than both of you living with the tension of the unresolved reques? 2) There are different settings in Facebook that would allow you to accept the request but put your coworker in a more distant circle; 3) Or is it really more about most of us being too transparent on Facebook to begin with?  Read on.

HI TECH AND VINTAGE COWOKERS IN PERFECT HARMONY

This is the perfect image of the ideal multigenerational workplace. Seriously!? Yes! And here’s why: 1) The smartphone represents the Millenials and Gen Xers with their extreme tech savviness, knowledge of pop culture and younger buyers, along with flexibility; 2) The horn - that actually becomes an external speaker for the smartphone - is a visual for the rich, full experience that Baby Boomers and Traditionals bring to their work; 3) The solid base is the innovative leadership that holds it all together.

At first glance, it’s somewhat odd looking. But then you begin to see the genius of it, and wonder if this would fit in your office or living room.

Those companies who can bring their vintage and high-tech workers together will flourish.

WIRE PRINTING BUILDS IT FAST

In the same way you can set a 2D printer to draft mode for quicker printing, the Hasso Plattner Institute and Cornell have teamed up to make a Wireframe 3D printer which can crank out a prototype in a fraction of the time it takes the conventional 3D printer to do a complete version.

3D printers are evolving at break-neck speed. How can your business use or play a part in this industry?

BIRD-PROOFING DRONES?

This video does not end when you think, so be patient.

Is it possible to keep hawks away from airborne drones? How can a drone be enhanced to keep birds of prey out of their flight path?

This is just one example of how an emerging industry, such as the growing drone market, spurs on product redesign or new products to improve the original product.

So keep thinking about how the products and services YOU offer can be used or adapted for use with drones or other robotic devices.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVENLY SUCCESS?
This brilliant photo reminds me of the mix of vision and execution needed for success in today’s marketplace. The open rooftop, with its lightbulb shape, represents the strategic vision of the organization. The staircase represents the execution, i.e., “how we get there”. The staircase is winding, but it is a solid, well-built and upward moving structure.

‘The Evolution of the Desk’, A Video Visualization of How Computer Desks Have Changed From 1980 to the Present

thoughtblazers’ take:

WATCH AND SEE WHY SO MANY BOOMERS ARE STILL ADJUSTING TO TODAY’S WORKPLACE

In just about 60 seconds, you’ll get a better understanding of how the formative career years of Baby Boomers impacted them. In the 80s, the computer had a black and white screen, was "mouse-less", and was used to type letters and do math calculations. Everything still revolved around and supported hardcopy paper files, landline phone calls, and face to face visits at somebody’s desk. You didn’t multi-task because you couldn’t use the glue and scissors at the same time.

In the 80s everything happened at your desk, while in 2014 it happens on your screen, and that screen can be anywhere and take on a number of shapes and sizes.

Because of how they were introduced to technology and how cumbersome it really was, many Boomers still approach it with some apprehension, not wanting to be traumatized again. Gen Xers and Millennials can help their Boomer workmates by being patient and emphasizing how easy the new technology is.

OUR TAKEAWAY

“Easy” and “hard” are states of mind! If the younger workers can encourage their more seasoned coworkers to approach their new tablet and software with the “this will be easy to learn” mindset, the workplace will be more fun and positive for the entire team.
