‘The Evolution of the Desk’, A Video Visualization of How Computer Desks Have Changed From 1980 to the Present

thoughtblazers’ take:

WATCH AND SEE WHY SO MANY BOOMERS ARE STILL ADJUSTING TO TODAY’S WORKPLACE

In just about 60 seconds, you’ll get a better understanding of how the formative career years of Baby Boomers impacted them. In the 80s, the computer had a black and white screen, was "mouse-less", and was used to type letters and do math calculations. Everything still revolved around and supported hardcopy paper files, landline phone calls, and face to face visits at somebody’s desk. You didn’t multi-task because you couldn’t use the glue and scissors at the same time.

In the 80s everything happened at your desk, while in 2014 it happens on your screen, and that screen can be anywhere and take on a number of shapes and sizes.

Because of how they were introduced to technology and how cumbersome it really was, many Boomers still approach it with some apprehension, not wanting to be traumatized again. Gen Xers and Millennials can help their Boomer workmates by being patient and emphasizing how easy the new technology is.

OUR TAKEAWAY

“Easy” and “hard” are states of mind! If the younger workers can encourage their more seasoned coworkers to approach their new tablet and software with the “this will be easy to learn” mindset, the workplace will be more fun and positive for the entire team.
